OtoscopeOtoscopy : This term relates to looking down the ear canal with an otoscope. This is done to determine if there is wax or other debris that may be interfering with hearing. We can also see the eardrum and determine if there is any medical condition that needs attention.

Video Otoscopy: This uses an otoscope attached to a camera which takes pictures of the ear canal and eardrum.

TympanogramTympanogram: This test measures how the eardrum moves. It lets you know if you need further medical attention or if the potential hearing loss needs amplification attention.

Otoacoustic Emissions: This test allows us to determine if the outer hair cells in the cochlea are functioning properly. This is important particularly for a person who is unable to respond to a standard hearing evaluation.

Middle Ear Muscle Reflex: The reflex is measured by sending a sound down the ear canal to the eardrum and watching the response to this sound.

Pure Tone Threshold: This test is performed to determine the level of hearing in Pure tone thresholddecibels (loudness) and frequency (pitch). The sounds are produced by an audiometer (pure tone beep) and the X (for the left ear) and O (for the right ear) are entered on a graph Pure tone thresholdwhen the patient responds to the softest sound he/she can detect (threshold). The sounds are presented both by air (headphones) and by bone (bone oscillator) to determine if the hearing levels are due to sensory damage or mechanical damage.

Speech testingSpeech Testing (speech reception threshold and word recognition score): Understanding speech stimulus is very important to know. Very often a patient can hear sounds, but does not understand. This test will determine the degree that understanding is a problem.

Speech in Noise: Many patients complain that the problem is not hearing, but understanding in noise. This test will determine how much of a problem exists.

Electronystamogram (ENG): This is a series of procedures that challenges the balance system to determine if imbalance is due to the vestibular system or another central system.

Auditory Brainstem Test (ABR): This is an electrophysiologic procedure that helps determine the integrity of the auditory pathway. This is an important procedure for infants and children who cannot respond to a standard hearing test and adults with asymmetrical hearing losses.

Auditory Processing Tests: These tests consist of a battery of tests to help determine if a person has difficulty processing the speech signal.

Live Speech MappingLive Speech Mapping (LSM) : This instrument measures the amount of sound delivered to the eardrum both amplified (aided) and unamplified (unaided).
